PRESS RELEASE
Mayor Salina Participates in the Opening of New Walgreens Drug Store, Berlin, Connecticut
Walgreens, a drug store chain based in Deerfield, Illinois had a ribbon cutting event commemorating the opening of its new store at 980 Farmington Avenue in Berlin, Connecticut. The 14,800 square foot store includes a full service pharmacy and offers a range of additional merchandise and services including from groceries to home medical health care. The store will employ approximately 30 people.
Berlin Walgreen project reflects a spirit of partnership between Walgreens and the Town of Berlin. The project developer, Mark Investments, Inc. of Newton, Massachusetts assembled the properties that comprise the project site, demolished 7 outdated structures and redeveloped the site into a modern retail location. In redeveloping the property the developer worked closely with the Town to design a building that is in keeping with the Town's design vision for the Farmington Avenue corridor. The project also includes landscaping elements, estate fencing and decorative site lighting that will coordinate with other recent projects on Farmington Avenue. In addition the developer granted an easement along the Mattabesset River to the Berlin Land Trust in order to create expanded public access to the River. The building was constructed by Merit Associates of Berlin
Commenting on the project Berlin Mayor Adam Salina said, "The Walgreens project is another major step forward for the revitalization of Farmington Avenue. It is significant that the architecture, landscaping and site fixtures are in keeping with other recent projects such as Stop and Shop so that the Street is fast taking on a new look. I welcome Walgreens to Town and wish them success with the new store."
